Some Easy Ways To Increase Computer Speed

Dec 20th, 2011 Walter Bourn

Anyone who owns a computer knows that over time their once fast and efficient machine begins to slow down. The slower speed of the machine can be due to a number of different reasons. The unit might be using too much RAM to display pages with, which will cause it to run slowly. The programs you are trying to run might have requirements your computer does not meet such as the processor speed. If you only experience lags when connected to the Internet it could be due to interference in the location you are at or a low quality connection.

There are ways to increase computer speed without having to go out and buy a whole new machine. If your lag occurs when playing video games you can check your systems hardware to see if the graphics are displayed using an internal chipset or a graphics card. The integrated chipsets use RAM to render or draw everything displayed on the screen. Even though your video game requirements say it can run with 2GB of RAM, if the computer only has 2GB of it, some is being used to draw the images so it is not all free to run the game.

The easiest fix for reduced RAM is to install more, however, if your unit can not take any more or you do not have the funds to purchase more you can perform some simple tasks to help free up some of that memory. Every time a computer boots up it loads a small percentage of everything stored on the hard disk. This is used to create all the shortcuts on the desktop or in the start menu, which uses a percentage of the running memory. If you really do not need the shortcut it is best to remove it to free up space.

Another way to get pages to load better is to go into the systems setup where you can access the virtual memory. Systems running windows will automatically have this set so windows decides how much to allocate any given program. This can be anywhere from 16MB all the way up to 3GB. You can change the settings so the minimum and maximum are the same or just increase the minimum to a higher amount than 16MB. A good rule of thumb is have the maximum set at one and a half times the amount of your actual RAM so 2GB would really be 3GB for virtual memory allocation. This change will help the performance of all programs run on the machine and is not limited to only those using graphic displays.
